Adventure Race Distances

There are several types of adventure races, usually specified by length (8-hour, 12-hour, 24-hour, etc.). A common question about AR is how far apart each segment is, but that doesn’t really make sense.

The AR actually measures race distance by time because different conditions can make different sections easy or surprisingly difficult. For example, in an 8-hour run, you can expect to spend about 2.5 hours on the bike, 2.5 hours on foot, and 2.5 hours on the canoe. Whatever the length of the race, just divide the total time equally among the three main disciplines.

These are races that casual athletes can complete in less than 90 minutes. Courses are usually marked but may require some navigation.

This is a great way for racers of all ages and fitness levels to start adventure racing. There is usually no gear required for these races – but the bike section requires an off-road bike.


These races follow the Rogaine format, where you have a time limit to time the course. They usually run for 3-4 hours and the racers get a little bit of time in each discipline.

It requires some navigation, and will have some mandatory gear such as; Hydration a safety whistle. This is a great split for beginner weekend warriors.

Elite Class

This class of racing is designed for experienced adventure racers. Navigation and terrain can be extremely challenging and races are usually over 8 hours long, lasting up to 30 hours. Not only that, it can also have an extensive gear list.


These are multi-day races, which can cover hundreds of miles and take several days to weeks to complete.
